Two winners emerged on Sunday at the DP World Tour’s season finale, Matt Fitzpatrick claiming the tournament title at the DP World Tour Championship. With an impressive final-round 66 at the Jumeirah Golf Estates, Earth course, in Dubai, Fitzpatrick played his way into a playoff with Rory McIlroy, who eagled the par-5 18th to match Fitzpatrick at 18 under for the tournament. A par on a replay of the 18th for Fitzpatrick, after McIlroy hit it in the water this time around, secure his third career win in this event, and the $3 million first place prize money payout.
But McIlroy was still walking off with some impress hardware and history even after the playoff loss. His performance was enough to secure his seventh career Race to Dubai title, winning the season-long points list comfortably over Marco Penge and the accompany Harry Vardon trophy to go with his Players and Masters wins and his victory with Europe on the road at the Ryder Cup in Bethpage.
“I’ve said it before, I didn’t get this far in my dreams,” McIlroy said after the round, “but it is a dream come true, and hopefully I can come back and make more history next year.”
McIlroy now trails only Colin Montgomerie, an eight-time winner of the Race to Dubai.
