The RBC Canadian Open marked a tough spot on the schedule as the PGA Tour’s only stop north of the border is sandwiched between the Memorial Tournament’s signature event and next week’s U.S. Open at Oakmont.
Luckily for the event, held at TPC Toronto for the first time, Rory McIlroy opted to sit out the Memorial so he could be fresh for this week and next. He played for the first time since the PGA Championship, although he shot a second-roud 78 to badly miss the cut. In fact, he only topped seven players for the week.
By week's end the PGA Tour had itself its fifth repeat winner this season with Ryan Fox topping Sam Burns on the fourth hole of a sudden-death playoff. Fox won the Myrtle Beach Classic just a month ago. Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Sepp Straka and Ben Griffin are the other multiple-time winners this year.
Fox took home $1.764 million from the overall $9.8 million purse.
It was a topsy-turvy day in Canada as Burns shot a back-nine 29 to put the finishing touched on a final-round 62 to take the clubhouse lead. Then he sat. And sat. And sat. In fact, by the time Fox birdied the 18th hole to get into a playoff and the duo went to the 18th hole to decide things, it had been exactly two hours since Burns last hit a competitive shot.
Both men had chances to win in the playoff. Burns badly missed a six-footer for birdie the first time and Fox didn't even get a 12-footer for birdie to the hole on the second playoff hole. After each making par the first three times, Fox hit 3-wood from 260 yards to five feet. Burns three putted for par and Fox only needed to two putt for his second PGA Tour victory in a month.
Kevin Yu was third, a shot back. Cameron Young and Matt McCarty tied for fourth place. Young needed birdie on the last hole to get into a playoff and made bogey while looking for his first PGA Tour title. Yu, McCarty and Young all qualified for the Open Championship via their top finishes.
Nick Taylor tied for 13th place and was the low Canadian for the week.
Up next: the U.S. Open at Oakmont.
