We promise we weren’t trying to jinx Davis Riley. Still, it was easy to predict what Dan Hicks and Paul Azinger might say late on Sunday’s NBC broadcast of the Valspar Championship if the 25-year-old PGA Tour rookie who held the 54-hole lead at Innisbrook Resort outside Tampa failed to close things out and capture his first tour title.

“You know … this wasn’t the finish Davis was hoping for, but it’s going to be a good learning experience.”

Indeed, Riley was facing a situation he hadn’t been in in his 24 previous tour starts. The former Alabama All-American whose career-best 62 on Saturday at the Copperhead Course vaulted him into a two-stroke lead over Matthew NeSmith, had never been better than T-15 entering the final round of a tournament so far in his young tour career. That was at The American Express in January, and he wound up finishing T-59. His best spot entering any round was a T-5 back in January.

Sure enough, Riley struggled a bit on Sunday, losing the entirety of his lead with a triple-bogey 8 on the fifth hole. And while hanging in there to force a playoff despite shooting a one-over 72, Riley couldn’t close things out, falling to a 32-foot birdie on the second extra hole from Sam Burns.

Mind you, falling to Burns isn’t something to be too broken up about. Burns, 25, was the defending champion and now has three wins in the last 10 months, something only Patrick Cantlay can boast about. Three back of Riley to start the day, Burns got hot with his putter en route to a Sunday 69 and then making the long putt in the playoff to cap the victory.

With the victory, Burns joined Paul Casey (2018-19) as the only repeat winners in the tournament's history and claimed the $1.404 million first place prize money payout from an overall purse of $7.8 million. Here’s the prize money payouts for each golfer who made the cut at the Valspar.
