It is no secret that golfers who are fit for the proper equipment will perform better, and since the only piece of equipment you use on every single shot is the golf ball, getting fit for the right golf ball for your swing is critical to playing your best.

When you walk into a golf shop looking to buy a new driver, you’d never buy one without getting properly fit, or at least without hitting a few shots to make sure the club is right for you. The same is true when selecting a golf ball. In fact, the golf ball is the most important piece of equipment to be fit for because if the ball you’re playing isn’t the best option for your game, then your clubs won’t perform the way they’re supposed to.
If one type of golf ball were right for everyone, Titleist would only make one model. Instead, the company offers three unique premium golf balls—Pro V1, Pro V1X and Pro V1X Left Dash—each of which is designed for specific types of players. Titleist offers three ways to find out which model is best for your game. Golfers can use the interactive Golf Ball Selector tool on Titleist.com, schedule a live one-on-one video chat with a Titleist fitting expert, or receive an in-person fitting at golf courses throughout the U.S. Any Titleist partner with a Trackman or Foresight GCQuad can conduct a fitting with the Titleist golf ball fitting app.

Every golfer can benefit from a proper golf ball fitting
“I don’t swing fast enough to play a premium golf ball, let alone get fit for one,” or “I am not good enough to play a Pro V1” are two of the biggest misconceptions. The reality is that how a golf ball performs is not based on swing speed, but rather the unique impact characteristics of each player. This is routinely proven at Titleist golf ball fittings with Tour players as well as amateur golfers of all skill levels. Two Tour players with the same ball speed can (and do) play two different models in the Pro V1 family based on their unique spin profiles.
Do you struggle with a low ball flight off the tee? Do you spin the ball too much or not enough on approach shots? Are you looking for more greenside spin? Titleist’s premium models are designed to cater to these different players and their games, regardless of if they are tour pros or higher handicappers.
You’ll see the biggest differences between a properly fit ball and one that’s not right for you when you’re hitting scoring shots. On a short, 40-yard wedge shot, for example, each of the three balls in the Pro V1 family will perform differently, even when hit with the same swing speed. To dial in these scoring shots, you need a ball that consistently performs the way you want, every time.

“Every golfer can benefit from a proper golf ball fitting,” says Steve Coan, Director of Golf Ball Fitting & Education. “We developed the Titleist golf ball fitting app to deliver an efficient and incredibly accurate fitting experience. The app provides a data-driven recommendation of the best-performing golf ball after just 12 swings.”
If you’re looking to save a few strokes each round, finding the right ball for your game can make an immediate and meaningful impact. In fact, there is a good chance the model you are currently playing might not be the best-performing golf ball for you. Titleist has conducted tens of thousands of in-person golf ball fittings in the past year, and 60 percent of those golfers are being recommended a different ball than they are currently playing.
Being fit for a golf ball is not a one-and-done process, either. As you evolve as a player and change clubs throughout your bag, it’s crucial to evaluate whether the ball you’re playing is still the right choice for you. Should you buy a new set of irons or wedges, for example, you might be able to maximize the club’s performance by switching to another model within the Pro V1 family. Or if you make a swing change, you might need a new golf ball to perform the best with your new move.

Golf ball fitting is an ongoing process, but one that is sure to improve all aspects of your game. If each piece of golf equipment is a tool that you’re using to build a house, think of the golf ball as the nail that holds everything together. Get it right, and you’ll maximize the performance of all your clubs, leading to lower scores.
