Save for later

Peter Millar, the man, doesn’t exist. Alive and well, however, is the popular golf clothing brand bearing the name. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the Raleigh-based company started with a single line of high-quality cashmere sweaters at a handful of high-end private clubs and resorts. Affluent golfers immediately took to the vibrant, bold colors, buying up the likes of mint, maize and fuchsia.

The brand soon expanded into premium golf shirts, woven button-downs and finely tailored sportswear. In 2005, it was acquired by Sea Island Company, and Scott Mahoney was named CEO – a role he still holds. Today, the company maintains credibility with golfers on and off the course. With a roster of ambassadors including Cameron Young, Sam Burns, Ryan Gerard and Brandt Snedeker, and as the Official Outfitter of the USGA and The R&A, Peter Millar continues to invest in golf and evolve its products to keep up with the needs of amateurs and professionals alike. By expanding into distinct lines – like performance-focused Crown Sport and the luxury lifestyle designs of Crown Crafted – the brand offers something for every generation of golfer.

You can now find the label in 2,000 green grass accounts, including all the originals, alongside dedicated stores at several top golf resorts. Pinehurst Resort, for instance, recently opened its own dedicated Peter Millar boutique within the Carolina Hotel. “It was an opportunity to showcase our brand’s full breadth in a way that mirrors the experience customers find in our standalone retail locations," says Todd Martin, President of Golf at Peter Millar. As a result, customers are already gravitating towards “unique custom-print shirts featuring iconic Pinehurst landmarks found nowhere else,” says Tom Pashley, president of Pinehurst Resort. “The store appeals equally to visitors and locals looking to elevate their style.”

Whether they’re being worn at bucket-list resorts or the local muni, Peter Millar's pieces are built specifically for the mechanics of the game. It’s an approach rooted in the details: fabrics that stretch quietly with a swing, zippers that glide without snagging, water repellant finishes and breathable materials engineered for hot days on the course. The design and creative teams incorporate best-in-class materials and trims into every product, along with occasional pleasant surprises, such as custom bottle openers in some quilted jackets or ball markers in select outerwear pieces. Perhaps the Peter Millar calling card is including handwritten notes and mints in its orders—an attention to detail that’s become a beloved signature of its customer experience.

“Golf has always been part of our heritage, and it will always continue to be foundational to who we are as a company,” says Martin.
