One number highlights how drivers have changed in the last 5 years

In the equipment industry, technology and design change rapidly. Five years ago, TaylorMade introduced a carbon-fiber Twist Face to the masses with Stealth, while Titleist had recently embraced a springy ATI 425 face material that would change the trajectory of its drivers. Ping continued to unlock new levels of forgiveness with the G425, and Callaway chased speed with the Rogue ST—a driver still used by several tour pros.

It's possible you still have one of the aforementioned drivers in the bag, because not everyone has the ability to upgrade their driver every year. Of course, it's natural to wonder how driver technology has evolved since 2022. So instead of wondering what's changed, we dug into five years of robotic driver data with the Golf Laboratories swing robot to determine where performance has changed drastically and remained flat.

Many drivers in the last five years have been sold on speed, but if you compare drivers we tested from 2022 to those released in 2026, average ball speed remained consistent (135.9 mph versus 136 mph). And that's taking into account the average of nine impact locations on the face at 95 mph.

While the flatline might feel like a story about the industry running out of ideas, we've witnessed a pivot in the last five years that's far more beneficial for the average amateur.

The two lines that hug the zero line—ball speed and total distance—are the numbers the industry uses to sell drivers. They barely moved. The two lines that walked away from zero are the ones that actually changed: dispersion improved considerably, and spin declined every year as manufacturers chased distance.

With speed locked, the R&D dollars went to two places that showed up in a big way as we combed through the robot data.

The first is dispersion, where the 95 percent confidence ellipse—containing 95 of every 100 shots—dropped from 1,316 square yards in 2022 to 1,021 in 2026. Against the larger 2025 field of 55 heads, it fell further to 992.

That's a roughly 25 percent reduction in the size of the miss. Center-strike numbers held, but off-center numbers tightened by a quarter. It's why we've seen some low-spin offerings start to become playable for golfers at average swing speeds.

If you can improve the off-center performance on a low-spin model that used to be unforgiving on misses, you're able to give golfers exactly what they crave: speed and forgiveness.

Spin rates also declined from 2,936 rpm (2022) to 2,585 rpm. That's a 350-rpm reduction over five years, and it's the reason total distance is up about nine yards despite ball speed being unchanged. Peak trajectory came down from 72 feet to 64 feet as well, which goes along with a drop in spin. The ball comes out flatter and stays that way.

In the end, you're essentially gaining more distance through improvements in off-center performance and lower spin rates. It might feel like the face is hotter than what you played previously, but the punishment for a swing that isn't dead center has been improved by roughly a quarter.

If a Stealth, TSi, G425 or Rogue ST is still in your bag, the swing robot has no case for the upgrade on speed alone. But it has a clear one when it comes to mishit performance and dispersion.

This is a different pitch than the industry has been leading with, but for most amateurs, it's the pitch that could actually lead to lower scores.
