These are the best drivers for 6 common mishits, according to a swing robot

Everyone wants to negate the biggest miss with their driver. But understanding how to accomplish this task is more nuanced than you might realize.

For example, TaylorMade's Qi10 LS remains the gold standard for a high-toe miss. During a recent round of robotic testing with the Golf Laboratories swing robot, the low-spin offering gained an astounding 4.2 yards on a common miss for most amateur golfers—the longest single mishit at 228.3 yards.

The lone data point could be reason enough to pluck one from the used bin at your local golf shop. However, there's another side to Qi10 LS that needs to be discussed.

Move the strike to the low heel, and the same driver spits out a carry number of 184.5 yards, the worst single-zone reading in our testing. For those keeping track at home, that's a 43.8-yard swing across one clubface, the widest of any driver in the test.

The Qi10 LS is, depending on where you catch it, both the best and the worst driver at 95 mph.

That gap is critical when you're searching for a driver that caters to a particular miss. Golfers shop for drivers as if a head is fast or slow, long or short, forgiving or not, as a single fixed property. But a swing robot hitting the same head in nine different impact locations otherwise.

Simply put, a driver is not a single number. It's a map, and the map has hot and cold spots; which corner you tend to find decides whether a given head is the longest in your bag or the shortest.

For this piece, we analyzed 47 drivers spanning the last three product cycles from nine manufacturers. We dialed in the Golf Laboratories swing robot at 95 mph and struck six Titleist Pro V1 balls from each of nine face zones—a three-by-three grid running heel to toe and low to high—for 2,538 shots in total, all at a neutral attack angle with a square path and face throughout.

The goal of this test was to identify the best drivers from a crowded pack for the most common mishit locations.

Let's start with the one thing all of these offerings can agree on: The low heel is where drivers go to die.

Of the 47 heads in the test, 38 posted their single worst carry on the low-heel strike. The field averages 204.3 yards from this impact location, more than 20 yards below the mid-center average of 224.5 and nearly seven yards below the next-worst zone. No other miss comes close, and no design philosophy fully escapes it.

The low-heel strike combines the two things that cost a driver distance. It sits below the center of gravity, so it launches low and loses carry through a weak trajectory, and it sits toward the heel, where gear effect adds left-tilting sidespin that bleeds yards. The robot finds this wall on nearly every head in the test.

What separates the field is how hard each driver hits that wall. The best low-heel performer, Ping's G440 Max SFT, carried 217.3 yards on the strike that costs most heads their worst number. The worst, the Qi10 LS, carries 184.5. That's a 32.8-yard gap on a single miss, the largest range of any zone we measured, and it is the clearest argument in the test for why the miss matters more than the model.

The G440 Max SFT is a draw-bias head, and that is not a coincidence. Draw-bias drivers pack additional mass into the heel to fight a right miss, and that same heel mass props up the heel-side strikes that wreck everyone else. The five draw-bias heads in the test average 214.5 yards on the low heel, more than nine yards clear of the standard-tier average and nearly 15 yards clear of the 10K tier.

The marketing group sells these heads as slice-correctors. The robot says they are also the only heads in the field built to survive a destructive miss.

Widen the miss zone to all three heel locations (low, mid, high), and the pattern holds, with a twist. Cobra's Dark Speed Adapt Max D led the field at 218.2 yards, edging the Ping G440 LST at 218.0 and the TaylorMade Qi35 Standard at 217.3. The Adapt Max D is another draw-bias head, and it manages to retain distance the same way the G440 Max SFT does: Mass in the heel turns a weakness into a strength.

But the heel-miss leaderboard is more mixed than the low-heel list alone. Standard-tier heads take five of the top 10 heel spots, because a heel miss averaged across all three heights includes the high heel, where launch is less of a problem and a fast, well-built standard head can keep up.

The lesson for a heel-biased golfer is that the right answer depends on where in the heel the misses cluster. If they are low and heelward, the draw-bias heads pull away. If they ride higher on the heel, the field tightens, and raw speed re-enters the conversation.

The gap from first to 10th in the heel category is just 3.2 yards, the tightest of any miss in the test. A heel-miss golfer has options. The driver that wins outright is barely ahead of the 10th-best head, which means other measurables (look, sound and feel) can break the tie without costing noticeable carry.

Where mishits thrive

If you're going to miss, make sure it's on the toe side, where the overall picture is rosier. As we've seen with recent offerings, there's no need to sweat a toe miss diving out of play. Most of these heads hold their line and maintain playable spin.

Ping's G440 LST leads the toe category at 225.3 yards, with Cobra's Dark Speed Adapt Max-K at 224.7 and Callaway's Elyte at 222.4. The toe-miss top 10 is stacked with low-spin and standard models, heads built for speed with a reasonable amount of off-center protection.

Gear effect explains the switch. On a toe strike, the ball gets right-tilting sidespin that, within reason, holds carry better than the heel-side miss does. Across the field, a toe strike carries about six to seven yards farther than the matching heel strike at the same height.

The toe is the forgiving side of the face, which is why the heads that win here are the ones already producing the most ball speed. They don't need heel mass to survive the toe. They just need to be fast, and the fast heads have that everywhere on the toe side.

This is the inverse of the heel story, and it makes the case for knowing your miss pattern before you shop.

The trajectory tax

The vertical axis tells a simpler story than the horizontal one, but it carries a larger penalty. A strike high on the face launches higher with less spin, a combination that's designed to increase carry. A strike low on the face does the opposite, launching lower with more spin, a combination that sacrifices distance due to a suboptimal trajectory, regardless of descent angle.

The numbers bear it out. The field averages 217.6 yards across the high-face zones and slips to 210.5 across the low-face zones. The Ping G440 LST wins the high-face category at 225.3 yards, the same number it posted to win the toe category, which is a hint at how complete that particular head is across the face. Callaway's Elyte Triple Diamond and Cobra's Dark Speed Adapt Max-K round out the high-face top three.

The low-face category is where the field separates most sharply, with a 27.8-yard spread from best to worst. The G440 LST wins this one too at 219.7 yards, with Cobra's Dark Speed Adapt X at 218.7 and Callaway's Quantum Max D at 217.2.

The fact that the same head can lead the toe, high face and low face says something the single-zone lists can't: A few heads in this test are genuinely good everywhere, and the G440 LST is one of the clearest examples. Its worst zone, the low heel, still carries 214.6 yards, a number that would lead some heads' best zones. With an overall variance of 14.6 yards, it was one of the four tightest faces in the entire test.

The high-toe outlier

Which brings the story back to where it started. The high-toe miss is the one zone the longest-everywhere heads don't win, and the driver that does win it is the same one that finishes dead last on the low heel.

The Qi10 LS, a 2024 model two product cycles old, carries 228.3 yards on the high-toe strike, beating every newer head in the field. It does it through the same trait that sinks it elsewhere—a face that rewards the high-toe more than any other head, and punishes the low-heel worse than any other head.

The Qi10 LS is the test's purest specialist. For those who live in the upper toe, it is the longest driver for arguably the most common miss. However, those who deal with inconsistent contact might want to reconsider due to the extreme heel penalty.

Most heads are not this extreme, but every head is some version of it. The Cobra Dark Speed Max owns the most consistent face in the test, varying just 12.5 yards from best zone to worst. The widest faces tell the opposite story, and the Qi4D sits among them at 33.3 yards, tied with the Wilson Staff DYNAPWR Max Plus and behind only the Qi10 LS itself.

In some cases, newer did not mean more consistent. In several cases, it meant a head engineered for a stronger, lower flight that gives up more carry when the strike drifts away from the geometric center.

What the robot data tells us

There is no best driver in this test. There is a best driver for the high toe, a different one for the low heel, a third for the full heel side and a fourth that happens to be very good nearly everywhere.

Ping's G440 LST comes closest to winning outright, taking the toe, high face and low face; with no particular miss pattern, you could do worse than start there. But a golfer with a pattern, and most golfers have one, should be shopping the aforementioned mishit map, not just the model.

A center-strike number tells you what a head can do on the swing you make least often. The miss map tells you what it does on the swings you actually make. The Qi10 LS that carries 228 yards on the high toe and 184 on the low heel is not a contradiction. It is a reminder that the question isn't which driver is longest. It's which driver is the longest where you tend to hit it.
