Charley Hull did NOT seem thrilled with her star-studded group's pace of play at the U.S. Women's Open

Save for later

Charley Hull went viral on Golf Twitter during Day 1 of the 2025 U.S. Women's Open. And it had nothing to do with smoking.

The two-time LPGA winner was part of a star-studded group with Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson on Thursday at Erin Hills, where she seemed less than thrilled with the pace of play. Here's a sampling with people believing a lot of her frustration came with Thompson in particular:

Hull didn't speak to the media after so we don't know what she was thinking exactly. However, she's made her feelings on slow play very clear in the past.

“It’s crazy,” Hull said at The Annika in November. “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘ Listen, like, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a two-shot penalty. If you have three of them, you lose your tour card instantly. Go back to Q School.' Because I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up and they won’t want to lose their tour card. That’d kind of kill the slow play, but they’d never do that."

That is pretty ruthless, but she's right. Slow play is terrible. That being said, it's kind of expected—especially at a U.S. Women's Open, where there were back-ups throughout the course on Thursday.

By the way, Hull and Korda shot even-par 72s to put themselves four shots behind a logjam early lead. Thompson was another shot back. But the clear leader in terms of tweets on the pace situation goes to Golf's Claire Rogers:

Stay strong, Charley. Stay strong.
