Calcavecchia sets record: Nine straight birdies

July 25, 2009

Mark Calcavecchia broke a PGA Tour record by birding nine straight holes in his second round of the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club on Saturday morning.

Calcavecchia began after opening with a pair of pars. He birdied the final seven holes on the back nine and the first two on the front nine.

Six players had shared the record with eight straight birdies. The last to do so was Jerry Kelly at the Las Vegas Invitational in 2003.

ADD: It should be noted that the "lift, clean and place" rule is in effect on the water-logged course.
