The best golf courses in Mexico
The 10th hole at Twin Dolphin Golf Club, a private course designed by Todd Eckenrode and Fred Couples, which continues to rise in our Best in Mexico rankings after opening in 2018.
Mexico is a large country (it ranks 13th in the world in geographic size) with a large population (11th). Almost all the great golf, however, exists on its perimeters, in less crowded areas.
If you’re planning a visit to play golf in Mexico, you are going to go off the beaten path, but the voyage will be well worth it in terms of outstanding courses and local flavor. There are three primary destinations, each distinct from the others: the Cabo region on the Southern end of the Baja California Peninsula; the Riviera Maya on the Gulf of Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula; and Puerto Vallarta on the southwest mainland coast.
The Cabo region is dry, desert golf and includes wild, rugged landscapes exemplified by courses like the Jack Nicklaus-designed Quivira Golf Club that moves from inland fields of saguaro and arroyos to rocky headlands that drop sharply into the Pacific Ocean (farther north, TPC Danzante Bay has similar terrain).
The courses of Riviera Maya are tropical and defined by lush vegetation, mangrove lakes, calm beaches and, on occasion, cenotes, deep freshwater sinkholes as found on courses like El Camaleon Mayakoba Golf Club and PGA Riviera Maya.
Puerto Villarta is home to the two courses at Punta Mita Golf Club and perhaps the country’s most famous golf oddity, the “Tail of the Whale” hole on the Pacifico course, a par three that plays to a green on an island outcropping of rock. It’s actually an alternative par 3 (called 3B) because it’s only playable when the tide is low and golfers can access it through a land bridge. The newest course in the region is located an hour drive to the north, the oceanside Nauka Golf Club, designed by Tom Fazio. It’s too new to be ranked, but we expect that to change soon, and it adds another compelling reason to explore golf in Mexico off the beaten path.
We urge you to click through to each individual course page for bonus photography, drone footage and expanded reviews. Plus, you can now leave your own ratings on the courses you’ve played … to make your case why your favorite should be ranked higher.
