We’ll leave the handicap questioning (which always accompanies the amateur winner of the AT&T Pro-Am) to others, but a tip of the cap to Aaron Rodgers, who teamed with his pro partner Ben Silverman to win the pro-am portion of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at 26 under par for the 54 holes played. The pro-am team event was shortened to 54 after weather caused play to be postponed for the day on Saturday.
Rodgers, who carries a 3.0 Index from Green Bay (Wisc.) C.C. (Rodgers is the quarterback of the NFL's Green Bay Packers) but was playing to a 10-handicap for the event, helped his team by 27 strokes as his partner, Silverman, shot one over par for the three rounds.
As for the clubs he had in the bag, Rodgers uses TaylorMade equipment throughout, including the company’s TP5 ball.
Off the tee Rodgers has TaylorMade’s new Stealth 2 Plus driver. The 9-degree head features a movable weight on the sole that Rodgers has moved all the way to the heel side, which fosters more of a draw bias.
The Stealth 2 Plus features not just the movable weight, but a revised design with less titanium around the carbon-composite face. That produces lower spin along with a higher moment of inertia that assists off-center strikes. The face also employs a variable thickness pattern designed to boost ball speed.
Rodgers irons are the company’s P•770 which is cast from 8620 carbon steel with a forged 4140 face. The hollow-body construction has a thin face for more ball speed and forgiveness, while a “speed pocket” sole slot provides more flex on iron shots struck low on the face.
Of course, when you help your team by 27 shots, there’s probably not too many of those.
