Why is Brooks Koepka an alternate in a PGA Tour event?

You may have wondered that after seeing photos of the five-time major champ waiting around to see if he'll get into this week's events at Harbour Town. Part of Koepka's Returning Member Program agreement to return to the PGA Tour meant he can't accept a sponsor invite into signature events like the RBC Heritage this year. However, he can still play his way into them and via the Aon Next 10 list (a list based on FedEx Cup rankings of those not already qualified), Koepka was the second alternate this week. He slid up to the first alternate when Justin Rose withdrew following his latest Masters close call. Koepka, who finished T-12 at Augusta, still has another few hours for another player to WD—otherwise he's going home.
