When you’re a chaser, you have to market differently, or maybe just a little more darkly.

Bridgestone’s new Tour B golf balls feature a new melding of the core and intermediate mantle layer designed to boost ball speed. It’s produced a few early-season wins, but that’s not necessarily going to move the needle anymore. So you have to think outside the box, or in this case outside the cover. And so to lend, er, visibility to the new Tour B, the company today launched limited edition RX and X models in black. The limited run will cost you $100 a dozen. Nike did a similar move with its One Black model two decades ago, getting tour players to put those dark orbs in play on signature holes like the par-3 16th at TPC Scottsdale. No word if any Bridgestone staffers will put these in play, but the models are on the conforming list. The only ones on the list that currently come in black.
