U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker is going to need a jumbo bottle of Pepto Bismol. In the first match of the morning fourball session, Justin Thomas hit a wayward drive that stopped just inside the out-of-bound fence that has players on edge early at Medinah. Forced to hit his next shot left-handed, things didn’t go well.

But the beauty of fourballs is you have a partner in play, and Jackson Koivun bailed out Thomas. But even he did it in weird fashion, his foot slipping while hitting his approach shot, which nevertheless stopped eight feet from the hole, then rolling in the birdie. On paper, it looks like the U.S. won the first hole just like they wanted to build momentum. But it was a roller coaster that, if it continues, will leave Snedeker’s stomach in knots.
