Tuesday spelled the beginning of the end of sponsor’s exemptions,

at least for PGA Tour events that will live on the Championship Series in 2028. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said that it was a point of discussion for the Future Competitions Committee but ultimately the players wanted to make sure that all spots in those fields were earned. Meanwhile, Rolapp said the sponsors themselves who have been made aware of this have come to accept their fate. “I think once we described why we did it, I think they understood,” Rolapp said. “A lot of the sponsor’s exemptions existed because we couldn't deliver fields they expected. That's our job. And so we think the system is going a long way in fixing that. Also, I just brings much more credibility for fans. I can't think of a sport where a sponsor decides who's in the competition. … You know, sponsors can't decide who's in the NBA playoffs. They should decide who's in a competitive golf competition.”
