Many players have described the rough at Aronimink this week as “patchy.”

There are areas where the rough is especially thick, while in other places it’s less dense. That means players will get many different types of lies this week, ranging from the hack-it-out types to the dreaded flyer lies. A flyer lie occurs when the ball is sitting fairly well but there is a little grass trapped between the clubface and ball. The ball shoots out with less spin and often goes one or two clubs farther. Considering many of Aronimink's greens slope hard from back to front, judging these flyers will be crucial to staying below the hole. The key is to read the lie correctly to make an educated guess on how it will come out.
