Jay Leng Jr. hit one of the best chip shots you’ll ever see.
Ever. The Stanford junior was battling England’s Jack Whaley in the U.S. Amateur championship match and hit this chip shot away from the hole. You’ll see from the video that the ball stopped high on the slope right of the par-4 fifth hole at Merion and rolled back down the fringe, onto the green, coming ever-so-close to going in the hole. The ball actually hit the side of the cup and stopped six inches away. Incredible. But here’s the thing, Leng lost the hole. That chip was for par, but he made bogey. Whaley made par, winning his fourth straight hole.
