"Just let him play golf."

Following his U.S. Amateur victory on Sunday, Florida State's Jack Whaley was asked if he's met Charlie Woods, who is set to join the Seminoles men's golf team in the fall of 2027. If Whaley continues on the trajectory he's on, he'll probably have turned pro by then, but he does have an extra year of eligibility should he want it. So they may team up, or they may not. That said, Whaley and Charlie have met, and he had nothing but good things to say about him. Plus some advice to those of us in the media, which will likely fall on deaf ears.

"I've met Charlie, and he's a great kid," Whaley said on Sunday. "He's very, very talented. I just think that a lot of the media kind of -- it makes it hard for him to be able to just progress. I think they need to just leave him alone a little bit and just let him play golf. I think at Florida State he'll have the opportunity to do that, and I think it's going to be better for him. If I take my extra year, I'm going to do everything I can to bring the best out of him."

Should Whaley stick around for 2027, he'll be a 23-year-old fifth-year senior with a U.S. Amateur victory and appearances in three majors under his belt, plus who knows what other accomplishments. Combine the accolades with his work ethic, and you couldn't hand pick a guy more ideal for Charlie emulate.
