Darren Fichardt picked a good time to catch fire.
The 51-year-old South African had to Monday qualify three times this year to get into PGA Tour Champions events and came up big Sunday at the Simmons Bank Championship by making an eagle on the final hole at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Ark., to clip Zach Johnson by one shot. He shot 69-61-64 for a 22-under total. It was the first senior victory for the five-time winner on the European Tour. It also propelled Fichardt into the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix in two weeks and assured him a full tour card for 2027. Michael Block tied for 10th place, but his season is done as he finished 43rd in season-long points, with only the top 36 advancing to the finale.
