Open co-leader Matt Wallace saved my short game.

Around the office I’m known for two things: a penchant for ridiculous coffee orders, and my horrific putting. But two summers ago I was fortunate to play with Wallace during a round in Scotland. After five straight holes of hitting greens—and five straight opportunities of birdie and eagle putts not scaring the hole—Wallace shared the biggest issue he sees with amateurs is not deceleration through the stroke, but speeding it up at impact, thus losing distance control. His advice was to feel like your takeaway has some swiftness and let the follow-through succumb to gravity and pace (while making sure not to hit the brakes at impact). Damned if it didn’t work. I’ll never be confused with Loren Roberts but putting is no longer the bane of my existence. Something to keep in mind for those at home struggling with the flatstick.
