How to hit a stinger off the tee

One of the more valuable tee shots for players who can generate decent swing speed is the stinger. The intent of it is to fly the ball lower with less spin, so it's great on windy days or when getting the ball in the fairway is the priority. However, it can be a hard shot to execute unless you make certain setup and swing adjustments. Here's what you need to know. —Chris Spalla, one of Golf Digest's Best Young Teachers in America

  • Tee the ball a touch lower than normal
  • Play the ball a few inches farther back in your stance
  • Set your spine angle more vertical at address (above, right)
  • Let your weight slightly favor your trail foot
  • Keep the backswing compact (above, right)
  • Don't sway or make a big body move off the ball
  • Your weight should stay fairly centered to the top
  • Swing down with 80-percent effort (speed adds backspin—and height)
  • Feel as if you're dragging the club through with your body and lead arm (above)
  • Focus on body rotation, not a whippy arm swing
  • Swing through on a level or slightly downward path
  • Feel your body staying down longer
  • Restrict your finish, like on a knockdown shot
