“Course uses the rolling sand-based terrain well and features many dramatic natural contours. Challenge on this course is focused on strategic play as fairways provide plenty of width and provides multiple routes to the green. Contours and free surrounds provide challenge and recovery options/considerations. Fairways were firm but Zoysia turf limits roll. Greens were firm and rolled true."

“Newest addition to the top tier of courses in Texas, and it definitely qualifies as a second shot course. Fairways are very generous (I only missed 1, and I am not generally super accurate off the tee). The definition of a course that emphasizes 'Width and Angles'. Excellent use of interior contours on the greens. Greens rolled true, and were reasonably fast, but they have to show some restraint on the speeds, due to the scale of the green contours and the threat of wind making some of the greens unplayable if they rolled at 12 on the stimpmeter. Every green on this course has some potentially evil pin positions. Despite the width of the fairways, it was often necessary to be on one side or the other to have good angle of approach. Having some local knowledge would probably make a big difference to your score. Waste areas can be quite penal, and the lies are very unpredictable. Half the times our group played from one, they took full swings. The other half were basically pitch-outs."

“Tom Doak is a legendary course designer, and this course is another example of why. The design feels completely natural to the land, with minimal dirt moved and the existing terrain allowed to dictate the golf. It already has the ingredients of a true bucket-list destination, and as the course matures, I believe it will only become more special. A remarkable piece of golf architecture."

“Another nice Tom Doak offering in Northest Texas. Generous driving areas, tough and challenging green complexes. Reminiscent of Pinehurst."

“WSD is off to a commendable start! Doak applied an ultra-minimalist approach to this ideal piece of sandy, rolling property. It is a welcome addition to public access golf in the great state of Texas, with (zoysia) fairways and (high quality Tiff Eagle bermuda) greens conditions typically only available to members of top private clubs. The greens are varied (in size, with some false sides or fronts) which can be visually intimidating when you first see them. But a little experience will show that a good approach shot will be rewarded, and there are birdies to be had. There is a nice mix of short and long par 3s as well as a couple of drivable (or nearly drivable) par 4s which create a lot of options for how to play them. The Doak course (? Roadrunner) did a nice job of making the course fade from fairway into playable waste area (for shots that just barely miss the fairways) to more challenging waste areas (with plants that could make it unplayable, but this equitably penalizes the most errant shots). I enjoyed it so much, I re-arranged my schedule to return for another round less than a week later! Golf as it should be!"

“Inviting fairways and greens, with mild topographical changes throughout the course. Various shot options off the tee, and greens were expansive enough to provide lots of pin locations. Good routing incorporates a nice mix of doglegs, different hole lengths and wind direction. Can challenge the scratch golfer with pin positions and length, but give the average golfer a lot of chances to make par."

“A playable & friendly design with a routing that utilizes rolling terrain, sandy soil, and mature pines. Standout holes include the par 5 13th that allows the player to take on risk off the tee to get a shorter shot to reach the green in 2 shots. Also, the downhill short par 4 17th with a very small green guarded by penal bunkering. The tee shot on the 17th offers the option to drive near to the green or lay back to a comfortable yet difficult wedge shot into the green"

“Mr. Doak and his team did a masterful job at creating a fun course with a variety of ways the golfer can attack each pin location. Very walkable. The par threes are very distinct and in my view the biggest strength of the course."
