“On Wednesday 9/18/24 I was able to play and evaluate Westwood GC. The John Breedmus design feature Bermuda throughout with Tifeagle greens. The course was originally built in 1928 and is the second oldest course in Houston to sit on its original plot of land. Shot Options 6.1922 The short par 4 hole #5 comes to mind here. You can pull driver and carry the bunkers on the left and be left with a chip shot into the green or you can hit less than driver laying up short of the bunker and have a wedge into the green. Challenge 5.8931 The course is not difficult. The course is in front of you through the entire round and if you execute the intended shot, you will have a stress free day. Layout Variety 6.3015 The course is very walkable with green to tee distances being adjacent. The course is built on a very flat piece of land with little undulation throughout with little to no elevation changes. The course does a solid job of mixing green shapes and bunkering surrounding the greens. The property has limited signage from hole to hole, but the layout flows well so understanding were to go is easy to understand. Aesthetics 5.9999 The course offers little in the way of eye candy but remains enjoyable to look at. It is very easy to notice things outside the gates as there is a tremendous difference between either side of the gate to enter the property. The course does a great job with attention to detail in mowing lines from rough to fairway which is noticeable from hole to hole. Conditioning 6.5228 The course was in great shape especially coming off a hurricane just 2 months earlier. The fairways were firm and fast with very receptive greens. Putts rolled true to intended lines and the surfaces were well maintained. Character 6.1911 The course is in great shape considering it has occupied this land since 1928. While outside the gates has changed dramatically over the years the course itself remains a solid place to play golf. Fun 6.3456 The course is a pleasant surprise. While it does not offer much in the way of challenge, I found it still to be an enjoyable round of golf. All levels of golfer would enjoy the day on this forgiving land with minimal obstacles. This place feels like a poor man’s Quaker Ridge."
