“Diversity in length, shot options to fairway and green, and large green surrounds would keep this course exciting on a daily basis. Add in the undulating topography on many holes, including some offering a risk/reward, and you also have a fun match play course."

“Tennessee National is a Greg Norman design located in Loudon, Tennessee, 30 miles outside of Knoxville. Playing at only 6,936 yards from the back tees with a course rating of 73.2 and a slope of 134, Tennessee National is a very good private, residential course. Situated on mostly flat farmland with a few gently rolling hills and scattered pockets of trees, Tennessee National winds along a bend of the Tennessee River. Leftover silos and other farm structures provide a rustic appeal that somewhat clashes with the encroaching and crowded residential development. Several cart paths literally pass within a short chip from pools, porches, or outdoor living areas and this suffocating feeling cancels out some of the aesthetic appeal of the river scenery and rural ambience, especially on the back nine. Also, powerlines crossing several fairways detract from the visual experience and can be in play for high-ball hitters. Tennessee National offers good variety and shot options with a nice mix of elevation changes, particularly the front nine. There are virtually no dead straight holes with almost all at least a slight dogleg with the majority being dogleg rights favoring a fade off the tee. Being slight doglegs, any shot shape will work at Tennessee National with the only exception being the medium length par 4 18th where a fade will either collect the lefthand trees or end up in some difficult bunkers on the right side of the fairway. Most greens can be accessed with running or lofted approach shots, but bunkers are steep and sod-faced, although not especially deep, so unlucky lies there can be quite punishing. Green complexes also offer several pitching, chipping or putting options depending on pin positions. At under 7,000 yards from the non-championship tees, Tennessee National is not particularly difficult for a strong player. Wide open fairways do not provide excessive challenges for tee shots and approaches are demanding in many cases but not fear inspiring. Greens are not severely undulating or sloped with only moderate to quick speeds. Tennessee National is a fair test of golf but strong players can be aggressive off the tees and will be able to take advantage of the short par 4 1st, 5th, and 13th holes, as well as the very reachable par 5 2nd and 14th. The 231-yard par 3 3rd is a strong hole, as are the 566-yard par 5 7th and 11th, and the long par 4 10th and 16th. The all-carry peninsula green 17th is visually intimidating but only 176-yards from the back tees so the fear is more imagined than real. Conditions at Tennessee National are generally very good. Fairways are firm but not especially tight so a good lie is almost always available following the tee shot. Greens were aerated and sanded but were receptive, still rolled true, although at a moderate pace. Bunkers were consistently well sanded and very playable. Tennessee National is a fun, residential course that combines some very good golf holes with generally pleasant scenery and playing conditions. It is a fair and forgiving test that rewards aggression with good opportunities to score well at all ability levels. If the housing had been placed with a bit more judicious concern about the effects on the golf course, both visually and from a playing point of view, Tennessee National would be an exceptional golf course, not just a very good one."

Some of the most memorable holes were the long par 3 3rd hole that is set into a hillside with anything left or short falling to the bottom of the hill and offering a challenging and pitch to the green. The par 3 12th hole with beautiful views of the TN river along the right side of the hole and the risk/reward short par 4 13th hole, which offered a path down the right side directly to the green, but required a carry over water vs. a safe route down the left side, but the left side required a much more difficult approach angle into the green."
