Overview
Phil Smith, the longtime design partner of Tom Weiskopf after Weiskopf and Jay Morrish split, finished this course as his partner's health was in decline due to cancer (Weiskopf passed away in 2022). Smith kept the focus on the site's views, aesthetics and gorgeous bunkers as Tom would have, but there's a little extra edginess in the hole-to-hole design that our panelists prefer to the club's original course.

“A nice selection of holes that uses two types of hole design, the mountain holes have varied ups and downs and tree lined fairways, the prairie holes roll through flatter terrain with grass lined fairways and wider landing areas."

“A great layout that uses two different and distinct types of settings, The prairie holes that roll through subtle terrain changes surrounded by different grass types that create a sense of motion when the wind blows. In contrast to the mountainous holes that have elevation changes and ponderosa pine lined fairways."

“Flying Horse North sits on a rugged, mountainous piece of property at high elevation just Northeast of Colorado Springs, with dramatic views of nearby Pikes Peak. Gently sloping ground contours framed by tall pines in the Black Forest provide excellent grounds for golf. The course starts with four holes through the Black Forest, enters an open meadow area for holes 5-9, and returns to the Black Forest on the back nine. There is a solid mix of risk/reward shot options, hole/layout variety and distinctiveness here. Overall, Flying Horse North is an excellent Colorado mountain golf course worthy of greater recognition."

“A Phil Smith designed new course set in a wooded, hilly site in north Colorado Springs with excellent views of the Pikes Peak and the foothills. It is a well designed course that takes advantage of excellent terrain and view corridors of the mountains. The course starts with a brilliant opening hole with an elevated tee where your drive framed by Pikes Peak. The course is routed beautifully, opening the wooded holes that look and feel like a classic mountain course, transitions to five holes in an open meadow before finishing back in the pines with views of the mountains on the west side. This might be the most playable course I have seen in a while offering risk reward options for better players off the tee and multiple options around the green complexes for a variety of recovery shots."
