Broomsedge Golf Club: Broomsedge
Overview
Broomsedge is the baby of Koprowski, a 41-year-old first-time club developer who has moonlighted the previous several years as a shaper with co-designer Franz. Living in Pinehurst, Koprowski saw central South Carolina as a potential soft spot in the expanding market of southeastern boutique private clubs and founded Broomsedge after locating this sand-based site 45 minutes east of Columbia. The land, divided into two distinct sections, is animated, cut by hollows and gullies. The designers filled the footprint with an impressive playbook of diverse and rustic holes of considerable breadth and movement, Koprowski’s more reserved touch balancing Franz’s penchant for boldness. The results are harmonic, with instant standouts that include the split-level par-4 second modeled after Eastward Ho!’s sixth (where Franz was working at the time) and the uphill, drivable par-4 15th with O.B. tight along the right.

“It's a course where certain holes just keep replaying in your head because they’re a little different and a little uncomfortable in a good way. A hole like the 4th stands out because it feels simple on paper, but anything drifting right brings trouble fast, and the green doesn’t give you an easy bailout. What really makes the course interesting and fun is how it changes: there are holes with alternate greens, and depending on which one you’re playing to, the entire strategy off the tee shifts. Overall, it’s wide enough that you don’t feel beat up, but clever enough that you’re constantly thinking about which side of the hole and green is the right place to be."

“Beautiful course on excellent terrain, maintained firm and fast. Plenty of room to be aggressive off the tee with greens that will test the short game. Do not miss if in the area."

“Wonderful aesthetics and variety hole to hole with the different tee lengths one can play each hole. Holes 6 and 13 have double greens as well that provide extra variety along with the different tee lenghts one can play on those holes. Great variety in length of par 3's with the short 11th as well as the very long 8th. Only 2 par 5's and both play short with greens that slope away from the fairway."

“I had the opportunity to play Broomsedge recently and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I've followed the build out online from groundbreaking till now. Broomsedge is a compelling course on a relatively small footprint though it doesn't feel that way. Wide and expansive as is the new norm in design and thoroughly uses all features and most acreage in Rembrandt. Greensites interesting but not overbearing compared to a lot of newer designs and restorations. One criticism (if you could call it that) as there is ample room off the tee - the native areas are truly native and nearly impossible to find ball thus recovery options are limited. If there was a way to expose some of the sand undeneath (a la Pineneedles/Pinehurst etc) I believe the course and the strategic options would improve exponentially."

“What seems to be a common theme in terms of new golf course architecture, Broomsedge was built on a sandy rural terrain that utilized the natural contouring topography to its advantage. The opening stretch is already dubbed “Survive the First Five” for its demanding requirements off the tee, on approach and around the greens. The course has a wonderful layout variety, as there are as many as 20 green sites that can be utilized allowing a good bit of flexibility, fun and the match play / relaxed vibe this club strives for. While the fairways are wide, you will be penalized with wayward shots with its native grasses / quirky lies and sand, lots and lots of sand (over 140 bunkers). With tons of undulation around the greens, heavy slopes guarding the green complexes and a much more rolling topography one would think in central SC, your ability with wedges in your hand will always be tested. This course was a splendid mix and a whole lot of fun, something one would want to play every single day as a member and never get bored."

“Great piece of property and use of the natural features. Course played hard, firm and fast for the most part with little to no need to even clean the golf ball. Overall the fairways are massive as the challenge comes in more on the second shot (for the most part) and around the greens. Plenty of shot options for all types of play around the greens. Will be cool to see what this course and property grows into in a few years (with also the potential add of a another 18 holes across the road)."

“New course with a lot of length, even from middle tees first four holes all over 400 yards, then back to back long Par 3s. They do give you a lot of tee box options! The flags do throw off depth perception. A fair number of "blind" shot and the aiming sticks can put you in bunkers that are hidden from the tee. All of those things are correctable (with constructive criticism). Fun golf course to play if possible. Unique setup and style"

“Broomsedge is firm and fast and begins with a set of distinctive - and difficult - holes. The property is separated into two sections, each of which features both bold and more subtle land forms. Out of bounds plays prominently on several holes (always to the right), as the course is routed across a relatively small piece of land. Three holes feature alternate greens, so the course can present differently across repeated rounds."
