Overview
The Country Club of Scranton features 18 holes designed by Walter Travis in 1927. Dr. Michael Hurdzan added the "New Nine" in 1988, giving members and their guests three combinations of 18-hole composites to play. The nines: Pines, Willows and Falls combine to play as the Old, North and South. The Old course is the 18-hole combination evaluated by Golf Digest's panelists, and it sits 10th on our most recent list of the Best Courses in Pennsylvania.

“The CC of Scrantion is a great classic design that plays across a varied and severely sloped landscape. A stream runs through the property and comes into play several times as a hazard. The portion of the course across the road offers the greatest variety in terms of holes playing straight up, straight down and alongside the side of the prodominant hill. Renovations have been made over the recent years renovations have incorporated features from several different design schools including Austrailian sand belt style bunkers and church pews reminiscent of Oakmont. Although interesting for the specific holes, this has created a lack of continuity throughout the course."

“Country Club of Scranton is a wonderful and fun golf course. It has an old charm to it mixed with a tough and long challenge. Guarded by its bunkers and greens the inside holes (1-4, 9-11, 13-18) have a rolling and vast feel to them. Undulated greens mixed with well placed bunkers and firm conditions aid to needing to control your golf ball. The outside holes 5-8 and 11 are some of the best on the property including a long par 3, a driveable par 4 and holes with differing shot shapes and green complexes that are anything but tamed. Bunkering distinctly shows two different styles but overall placement of bunkers is both classic and penal."

“This Walter Travis design presents some of the strongest greenside shot options of courses I’ve played, courtesy of wavy greens on rolling land. The early holes have great greens, but the more tame land. However, from hole 6 onward (other than maybe 1 or 2 holes), the course is a roller coast ride confounding the good player by forcing them to decide among the many available shots. It has a low floor but a very high ceiling, with the seventh hole one of the more interesting holes I’ve ever played when it is firm as it played on this day. If this course had the budget of some courses near large metro areas to improve and make consistent its aesthetics, it could easily challenge many of the top 100 courses in many categories. A hidden gem!"

“CC of Scranton spreads across a wide piece of land, up and down and around a bowl and across a street four times. It is a journey that provides challenge, variety and some damn good views. The teeth of the course are the greens. The fairways are wide and inviting while the greens are diabolical. Greens display great variety. They are fast, undulating with many twists and turns. There is virtually no water on the course. A couple of small creeks meander but are only in play for truly poor shots. Holes 4-6 do have out of bounds off of the tee for a wide right shot. But again the fairways are wide and only a truly bad shot would be punished. Most greens are open to run up shots. Standout holes are the par 3 third with the narrowest green on the course, the 6th hole a long par 4 dogleg right, the 8th a short straight up the hill par 4, the 13th a short par 4 with another narrow green, the 16th a dogleg left down a hill to an uphill green and the long par 3 17th. Challenge and interest abound during the round."

“Several holes offer risk / reward decisions from the tee. Green contours require proper lines of play. Green contours are the main source of challenge and protect the course on almost every hole. Significant changes in elevation and green shapes are a real highlight. Played in early fall. Course was in full color, which complimented the natural beauty of this mountain course. Greens were firm and their pace were on the fast side. Great use of the geography with a distinctive personality in the region."

“A course that had it all in terms of hole design, firm and fast fairways, quick receptive greens that carried good speed, and good condition."

“Walter Travis big bold green complexes with some severely undulating surrounds and collection areas make this classic course a very fun and enjoyable experience. The routing takes you around the perimeter on the front nine, and winds you to the center of the property leading to the 18th with its fascinatingly contoured putting green. With a minimum of water, bunker placement, ground contours, and fescue grass provides the teeth to keep you on your toes. Creative shot making is a necessity here!"

“A bit unknown and under-appreciated in PA. Beautiful piece of property with several elevation changes. Biggest criticism is the differing bunker styles. Most of the bunkers around the greens are sharp, raised and shaved down around the edges. The newer bunkers are grassy and look out of the place with the original bunkering (which really elevates the course). Either way, definitely a place to play if you can. I played the day after a heavy rain and the greens were still perfect."
