Overview
Lakewood, located in a suburb west of Cleveland, opened in 1921 and is the only course in Ohio designed by A.W. Tillinghast. Like most courses of its vintage, it had been modernized through the decades and one of the club’s goals in 2020 when they hired Keith Foster, who has demonstrated his Tillinghast expertise at courses like Brook Hollow in Dallas and Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course, was to return it to the original routing. The other goal was to imbue it with a more rugged, Golden Age character by converting all the bunkers from flashed sand to a more vintage grass-faced style, expanding the fairway lines, thinning hundreds of trees that had been planted in the 1960s and ‘70s and recapturing an incredible 35,000 square feet of putting surface. Foster also modified Tillinghast’s Great Hazard on the par-5 15th, a vast sandy wasteland that terrorizes second shots in the same vein as the one at Baltusrol Lower’s 17th. The overall results when the course reopened in 2025, and for the efficient price of $6 million, is a drier, faster layout that looks and plays like it might have during the decade it was built.

“The recent restoration work at Lakewood CC was exciting to see. The project focused on returning the course to original routing, accompanied by significant tree removal to open up sight lines and enhance shot options. Fescue areas were added throughout the property and new emphasis on berms / ditches running along certain holes. Much of the most noticeable work to me was work done around the greens - specifically lifting of greens, deepening of bunkers and reshaping ground counters at entrances of greens. I believe these challenges did return the course to more traditional Tillinghast style. Overall, the restoration brought subtle but meaningful increase in shot options, aesthetics and character. While the property itself remains relatively flat and not much change to the greens when I played last. Certainly, increased certain green sizes which allow for more pin locations. It is a wonderful walk and certainly appears like membership is thrilled with results."

“Definitely a place to play if you can get access. The course does amazing things on a relatively flat layout. The course really maximizes what it had to work with, and the recent changes add immeasurably to making the course more challenging and more interesting."

“Renovation work has made a great improvement. Land is ordinary but the golf course plays fast and firm and reclaiming of original green surfaces has made for terrific complexes. Bunkering is beautifully done."

“Lakewood CC just underwent a full renovation. Routing taken back to Tillinghast original. Thousands of trees removed. Fairways widened. Tees flattened, squared off and some new tees added. Fescue added for a great visual. Not really in play. Visuals while on the golf course are great. A lot of character restored to this golf course. Very forgiving off the tee. Fun golf course to play with great conditioning."
