“This course has a great pedigree; William Flynn designed it. The land is relatively flat but there are some wonderful hillocks and terraces and creeks that Flynn used to make the course interesting, He did it without sacrificing quality on other holes."

“Elyria Country Club is one of those courses that gets lost in the mix in a Cleveland area that is filled with great courses. From one of the great architects in golf history, William S. Flynn, Elyria is a special place with over a hundred years of history."

“Elyria CC is a classic William Flynn design located along the Black river west of Cleveland. The fun begins as you approach the starter, Jeff, and see a bank of young caddies sitting on benches awaiting their loop. Elyria Ohio has been economically challenged for decades, and this fact is reflected in the caddie fees, which are half of what they are on the more affluent East side of Cleveland. You can get a thirteen year old “C” caddie (who looks more like 12), but these kids are well trained and unfailingly polite. The course is an example of Flynn’s exceptional ability to produce great routings. The front nine is a clockwise loop in the form of a giant C surrounding an inner loop that tracks along the twisting river. Bunkers were recently renovated and restored to their original design which is considered by William Flynn course experts to be very little changed since it opened in 1925. The course is only 6750 yards from the tips but it has every type of hole from a drivable par 4 to a 460 yard par 4 with an equal number of doglegs left and right. But the par 3s and par 5s are what distinguish this course. The par 3 eleventh features a 160 yard tee shot from a bluff overlooking a marsh to a raised green set at an angle, reminiscent of number 12 at Augusta. Number 13 requires a 170 yard shot over a pond to a peninsula green with the river behind and large trees protecting the right side. The “half-way” house overlooks this tee adding a little extra pressure to the tee shot. The par 5s present the best risk-reward holes on the course as they are each about 500 yards in length and reachable with two well-struck shots. Missed shots can result in bogey or worse. The golf holes are framed by majestic hardwoods, many of which are over 100 years old making for a pleasant walk in the woods no matter what your score ends up to be. If I could only play one course for the rest of my life, it would be Elyria CC."
