St. George's Golf and Country Club
East Setauket, NY • Private

Overview
Devereux Emmet’s masterpiece at St. George’s Golf & Country Club is getting its proper due after a restoration by Gil Hanse at the turn of century, reclaiming putting surfaces and fairway width to bring back Emmet’s original intent. At just 6,408 yards St. George’s is hardly a long golf course, but it can be challenging and still incredibly fun and challenging. The course was built in response to C.B Macdonald’s National Golf Links of America. Devereux Emmet and Macdonald were good friends who worked and traveled together in the years prior to NGLA. Emmet was even one of the founding members at National. The two men had a friendly rivalry so Emmet built his own home golf course near his estate and gathered a group of investors to help him do so.

“There are lots of blind shot off the tee and approaches to greens. If you don’t have a local playing with you there will be numerous times you’ll have no idea of a target. Very, very nice people. Welcoming and accommodating."

“St. George's is a classic Devereux Emmet design lovingly renovated by Gil Hanse recently. Located in a somewhat isolated part of Northern Long Island, this course often doesn't get the attention it deserves due to Long Island's depth but this is an excellent course with some really remarkable holes. Among the most memorable holes are the par 4 4th with its moat of bunkers surrounding the green and the postage stamp par 3 17th with its huge false front. I highly recommend St. George's to those who appreciate strong architecture."

“Fun old Emmet layout that Gil Hanse remodeled. Private on wonderful piece of land near Stoney Brook College. Short but really fun to play and you will hit every club. If you can get on play St. Georges!"
