Overview
Shore Gate is a challenging, target-heavy golf course—likely inspired by nearby Galloway National with a hint of Pine Valley—that's very popular with Avalon vacationers. Penal, deep bunkers as well as tall pines with pine straw and sand present a strong challenge to public golfers. It's a former member of Golf Digest's Best Courses in New Jersey but still among the very best public options in South Jersey.

“Very strong public course. The layout and the shot options are unique for a public facility. It’s very strong and beastly on some holes. While it is set in a very scrubby area of the pine barrens of South Jersey, Shore Gate has a fair amount of character."

“Likely inspired by Pine Valley, Shore Gate is a modern course on the Jersey Shore that plays somewhat like a public version of nearby Galloway National. The course is relatively flat but features excellent and very penal bunkering throughout with plenty of water hazards to traverse. It is one of the tougher courses in New Jersey and this is especially true on the public side. The greens usually roll quick and true but conditioning otherwise when I played was somewhat lacking with very soggy fairways and lots of crabgrass surrounding the bunkers. There are some very strong holes here and I especially enjoyed the Cape 7th, short beautiful 15th, and tough Biarritz 17th. Now that Atlantic City is private, Shore Gate is comfortably one of the best public courses in the state and worth a play."
