Overview
Arnold Palmer’s design team created a surprising amount of elevation at Occano (formerly Scotch Hall Preserve), a ninth-place finisher in Golf Digest’s Best New survey in 2009 under its first name (Innsbrook Golf and Boat Club). The layout maximizes the land along the Albemarle Sound with 11 holes on the water. The course calls itself the “Jewel of the Inner Banks,” a worthwhile stop for anyone traveling to or from the Outer Banks (though we hear a bunker project is underway, so check with the golf course). In 2022, Arnold Palmer Course Design co-vice president and designer Brandon Johnson completed an extensive remodel of the course that take the bunkers in a dramatic new direction and included the expansion and recountouring of the greens and green surrounds. The results give vibrant new playability to a course that already had rare aesthetic advantages.

“Good layout with interesting holes. Tough to score as difficult greens."

“A really nice layout design with a very good green complex. Location on the Albemarle sound gives you beautiful views! Several risk/reward opportunities that are very interesting and tempting, also a lot of options on how to attack holes. At almost 7,200 yards from the "Palmer" tees and just under 7,000 from the black tees, it is plenty of golf course. They have added some shorter tees too. 7 sets of tees make the course playable and fun for any golfer. Since it is on the sound expect some wind. Recent renovations of bunkers plus they added several and removed a few. Also expanded some of the greens back to the original design."

“Palmer tests, and rewards, the ability to draw (hole 2, 5, 8, 11 & 12) or fade (#1, 4, 9, 10 & 13) the ball on command off the tee. Great shot options at holes 2, 11-13 (with a 70' tree stationed in the fairway at #13) and 18. The bunkers however are in desperate need of an overhaul."
