Overview
Host to the U.S. Women’s Open sectional qualifier from 2009-'14, this Robert Trent Jones Sr. design is a solid test of golf along the shores of Lake Trace. A renovation in 2015, which brought significant improvements to the bunkers and putting surfaces, helped restore classic Jones features to the course.

“If you're in the Pinehurst area, make a stop in Sanford at Carolina Trace. Two quaint courses in a large residential community surrounding a great lake. The Lake Course plays quite a few holes on the lake and holds your intrigue throughout the round. And in typical RTJ fashion, use of water hazards and risk/reward shots are abound here. It's a nice spot to spend an afternoon round."

“I like the Lake course a lot. There is a distinct difference between the front and the back. It is not, however, a Top 100 course, nor is it likely to score among leaders for Best in State. Course can be a bear from the back tees. Elevation changes abound, especially on front side. Tight fairways, in places, felt dictatorial. Abundance of grass around the greens give lesser players opportunities to recover, There are some very good technical holes and also some strategic ones---the par-5, 14th in particular, in deciding how to play that second shot. Cool hole. The three memorable par-3's are all downhill water holes. Despite the many elevated par-4 greens, there is some decent variety in their routings. Typical of Jones, Sr. the tee shots, while fair, are also demanding. The bunker placements are dead-on for players using appropriate tees."
