Overview
The PGA Tour’s inaugural Kansas City Open was played at Swope Memorial in 1949. The Tillinghast design just outside the city center is a tight, tree-lined layout that offers views of the skyline in the distance. The course, adjacent to the Kansas City Zoo, hosted the 2005 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links.

The renovated layout takes full advantage of the property's dramatic topography, producing constant uphill and downhill movement, uneven stances, and changing visual perspectives from hole to hole. Although short by modern standards, the course relies on strategy rather than length, using tight corridors, blind shots, well-positioned bunkering, and clever green sites to defend itself. The combination of bold architecture, striking aesthetics, and thoughtful risk-reward design creates a memorable experience that exceeds most expectations for a municipal golf course. 1. Shot Options Swope Memorial excels at presenting golfers with meaningful choices throughout the round. Drivable par 4s such as #2 and #8 create compelling risk-reward opportunities, while reachable par 5s reward both aggressive and conservative decision-making depending on a player's confidence and position. The course incorporates several blind or semi-blind tee shots, requiring commitment and strategic thought before the swing is made. A strong mixture of holes allows players to either run the ball into greens or carry approaches directly onto the putting surfaces, while strategically placed bunkers influence decisions at every stage of the hole. Standout features include the punchbowl green at #9 and the angled, narrow green at the reachable par-5 17th, which creates one of the course's most memorable risk-reward scenarios. The variety of strategic opportunities keeps players thinking throughout the round. 2. Challenge While Swope is not long, it presents a balanced and fair challenge that places a premium on precision. Tight driving corridors on almost every hole, elevation changes, and constantly changing lies force players to carefully manage both direction and distance control. The course demands thoughtful positioning off the tee, often rewarding placement over power, while small greens on the reachable par 5s increase the consequences of aggressive play. Strategic bunkering punishes poor decisions more frequently than poor swings, creating a challenge rooted in architecture rather than brute difficulty. Better players can take advantage of scoring opportunities, but only if they carefully navigate the course's numerous strategic questions. 3. Layout Variety Layout Variety is arguably Swope Memorial's strongest attribute. The routing explores the property's natural landforms exceptionally well, producing a compelling mix of uphill and downhill holes, varied shot angles, and constantly changing visual experiences. Few holes feel repetitive, and there is a strong sense of anticipation throughout the round as each hole reveals something different from the one before it. The combination of drivable par 4s (#2,8,15), reachable par 5s (#5,12), blind shots, distinct green complexes, and varied bunker placements creates a rhythm that keeps golfers fully engaged. The routing's ability to continuously generate curiosity and interest is one of the clearest indicators of its architectural success. 4. Aesthetics Swope Memorial is an aesthetically striking golf course whose beauty is driven as much by architecture as scenery. You get the feeling you’re in for something special standing on #1 tee. It’s a very appealing straightaway uphill hole framed out by the large trees and bunkering. The dramatic land movement, mature trees, exposed dolomite features on #2 and 11, and bold bunkering create visually compelling golf holes from the opening tee shot through the final green. I also thought they did a great job making the par 3 visually appealing as well, especially #4 and 13 with the green complexes and placement of greenside bunkers. I feel like often times par 3s are usually relatively boring in nature, but especially on municipal courses. The routing consistently showcases the property's most attractive characteristics while using elevation changes to create memorable views and shot-making opportunities. The bunkering is particularly effective, both visually and strategically, helping frame holes and enhance the course's overall presentation. For an urban municipal course, the visual experience is remarkably distinctive and memorable. 5. Conditioning Conditioning was the one area that lagged behind the quality of the architecture during my visit. Quite a few areas of rough contained bare spots, and portions of the fairways played softer and fluffier than ideal, somewhat limiting the ground-game options that the design encourages on a few holes. The greens generally putted true and featured good overall playability, though conditions did not consistently elevate the architectural features the way firmer fairways and tighter playing surfaces might. While the conditioning was certainly playable, it currently falls short of matching the exceptional quality of the renovation and design work. I would expect the conditions to improve as the course matures, but could also be impacted by the amount of public play the course receives. 6. Character Swope Memorial possesses a strong architectural identity that separates it from most municipal golf courses. The restoration embraces the property's Tillinghast heritage while incorporating bold features that are increasingly uncommon in modern golf architecture (dolomites on #2 and 12, semi punchbowl on #9 green), including blind shots ( tee shots on #2,8,11,12,14), dramatic landforms, strategically place bunkers (#6 fairway bunkers) and highly strategic risk-reward decisions. The significant elevation changes and rugged terrain create a sense of place that feels unique within the Midwest, while the renovated design succeeds in making every hole memorable without feeling forced or gimmicky. The course feels authentic to its landscape and architectural roots, providing golfers with an experience that is distinctively Swope Memorial. 7. Fun Swope Memorial is simply a tremendous amount of fun to play. The combination of drivable par 4s, reachable par 5s, blind shots, creative green complexes, and constant strategic decisions generate excitement from start to finish. The course rewards aggressive play while still offering options for more conservative golfers, and nearly every hole encourages thought without becoming overly punitive. Most importantly, the variety throughout the routing creates a sense of anticipation that never fades, leaving golfers eager to discover what lies around the next corner. When the round is over, there are several holes that immediately make you want to play the course again, perhaps the highest compliment that can be paid to a golf course. Overall, Swope Memorial is one of the most compelling municipal golf experiences in the Midwest and a tremendous example of how thoughtful restoration can create architectural significance without relying on length. The course's greatest strengths are its engaging layout, dramatic topography, strategic shot values, and distinctive character. It consistently challenges golfers to think, rewards creativity and precision, and maintains a level of interest that rarely fades throughout the round. While conditioning remains the primary area for improvement, the underlying architecture is outstanding and creates an experience that is both memorable and highly replayable. Swope Memorial is the type of course that continues to reveal new strategic options with each visit and stands as one of the region's most successful golf course renovations."

“The update and restoration of Swope Memorial is terrific! From the moment you drive up the hill from the entrance and get your first glance across the course you know you are in for a challenging treat. The historic feel of the Tillinghast course is very present and the appearance of the property - with extensive sight lines - welcomes you in a special way. Large square bent tee boxes; renovated greens gently furl along the ground and accept well-struck shots; minimal bunkering that is clearly visible and penal; and strategic slopes that challenge the player while making the course play much longer than 6300 yards from the tips. The restoration wonderfully embraces the historic nature of the course. The addition of mounds, Dolomites, small elbows of rough extending into fairways all improve the feel and strategy needed while working your way through the round. I am concerned about the long term maintenance and durability of the bent grass tees, especially on the par 3’s, so it would be interesting to hear the architect’s thoughts about those. Some areas just outside the initial rough lines are still bare, rocky, etc., but expected this soon after the renovation. I look forward to returning to Swope to see how the work matures and the course holds up to heavy play due to the positive experiences players are sharing."
