Overview
Designed by Rick Smith and Warren Henderson, the duo responsible for the design of Arcadia Bluffs two hours north, this low-key private club outside Grand Rapids near Lake Michigan caters to summer residents. The course spreads in two relatively flat counter-clockwise loops over a beautifully marshy tree-lined site, and while there are 22 forced carries, the fairways are generous and provide room to play. The lack of homes on the course gives the player a sense of solitude, and the sandy terrain allows for some firm and fast fairways and greens.

“Wuskowhan Players Club is a very enjoyable Rick Smith design with a truly peaceful and beautiful setting. The ever-present marshlands, reeds, trees and lack of surrounding homes give the course a secluded feel throughout the round. Aesthetics was my highest-scoring category, due to the natural setting and the way the course naturally flows through the wetlands. Generally, WPC is a fun course to play, including the newly designed short par-4 11th. The aggressive play with driver over or around the big tree is tempting and fun, but unfortunately the risk isn't quite strong enough to match the reward. There should be more trouble left and right of the green/fairway to make it a true risk-reward decision on the tee box. More broadly, WPC has good character and is a beautiful track, but I scored Shot Options lower because the repeated marshland carries tend to dictate the shot. Too often the player is forced to either carry the marshland -- or lay up short of the marshes from the tee box -- rather than choosing among several truly different ways to play a hole. Conditioning was strong overall. The fairways were pristine and the course was clearly well cared for. But the firmness was lacking on the day I played (in July). The fairways were overwatered (there hadn't been recent rain) and softer than ideal, which reduced some of the bounce and ground-game interest that could make the course even better. Even with those limitations, WPC has strong enough aesthetics, character, and layout characteristics to feel like a borderline Top 200-225 course to me."
