Overview
Overlooking a valley and set amongst the Appalachians, Sunday River is similar in aesthetics to Sugarloaf, another top Maine ski resort that offers a scenic mountain course. Yet Sunday River plays to more generous landing areas than the relentless Loaf, making it the gentler sibling that still delivers scenic mountain vistas. This Robert Trent Jones Jr. design is a bit of a trek from many popular coastal Maine destinations, but consider the drive through the mountains and tiny villages part of the appeal. To play Sunday River in late September, with the foliage on full display, is one of the best mountain golf experiences in the Northeast.

“Sunday River is a beautiful and difficult golf course in a stunning setting of the mountains on the Maine-New Hampshire border. Opening in 2005, this RTJ II course was built at the tail end of the late 20th century boom in ski resorts upgrading their facilities to 4-season service. The course starts on a high note with angles and room to play, before narrowing the play in the course's midsection. After several fun holes in the middle of the back nine, the course again tightens up for a sloggy finish. This is a VERY severe site that has been worked to feel less so, but the holes that do not work are laid over the most difficult part of the property. One wonders if courses like this should be built in such severe settings, as mountain golf has an uphill battle (pun intended) to provide anything resembling traditional golf."

“Spectacular 360-degree views from almost every vantage point on the course. Visiting in the fall is a plus to experience the beautiful and brilliant foliage. Despite recent rains, the course drained well, but had noticeably soft fairways and greens. Greens were slightly untrue, and conditioning was not the best, but I chalk that up to the difficulty of managing a mountain course during the abbreviated golf season. One of my favorite courses in the state to visit!"

“Sunday River is a tough, challenging course due to the mountainous elevation changes and terrain layout. You need to keep your eye on putting instead of the very scenic holes with beautiful mountain vistas. The course has a full range and putting area for practice. The club house has a beautiful authentic log cabin look and feel to it, with areas for sitting and enjoying a local brew and great food."

“Great course in northern ME. Built on mountain with large elevation changes and up and down hill holes. Condition wasn't real good in July 2021 bur Boyne in MI just took over so I'm sure it will get better. Fun to play and worth the trip."
