“Great Dunes was great to visit. The course conditions were a little under performing given the course had only been open a limited time. The conditions of the greens and general shape was fairly decent. It has areas of improvement in most fairways, and some bunkers sand was inconsistent. The routing along what appears to be a second row of natural dunes create a great yet approachable challenge. The fairways were inviting and the scenery was tremendous. The green speeds and firmness could have been a bit faster and firmer, but overall, I was pleased with the golf course. I didn’t face any wind that day, however, I imagine that a few areas along the sea would increase a great deal if the wind was up. The holes were memorable and created a good layout variety, but the clubs used seemed to be very similar on most approaches. The finishing holes are great in their own way, but I am curious if routing it to finish with the scenic views that you have for most of your round was considered. For me the were a good finishing test, but to the average golfer, I think they will look back at the middle 6 of the round as the highlight due to its new design and proximity to the ocean."

“The restoration has given Great Dunes a far more compelling identity, especially on the front nine. The work around the greens is the course’s greatest strength. The contours and open surrounds create a number of different ways to approach and recover, and the greens, with the undulations and pinnable locations, ask players to think through shots rather than simply fly the ball to a target. There is some strategy off the tee, though it is less consistent than the interest around the greens. The front nine has a strong sense of variety, character and place, with the dunes and coastal setting adding to the experience without doing all of the work. The back nine is solid but less distinctive. It does not have the same architectural interest or cohesion as the front, which keeps the overall layout and character from reaching the same level. The course is highly playable and enjoyable for a wide range of golfers, and it should only improve as the new turf and playing surfaces mature."

“A recent redesign of a Walter Travis (4-12) and Dick Wilson design. Brian Ross and Jeffrey Stein did a great job restoring the Travis design and making the Wilson holes look like a Travis design. The green complexes are brilliant. Some are quite large with a lot of movement in them. #4 is called "Mae West" for appropriate reasons. A truly oustanding par 5. The 5th hole with the Atlantic ocean to your left is a super par 3. #10 and #11 both hugging the coast are great holes. The mix of short and long holes makes the course challenging but fun. The only hole I did not care for was the par 5 15th hole with an ill defined landing area. The course is rugged in spots if you hit it offline. Conditioning is spotty as the course has not fully grown in yet. With time it will. The greens are paspalum and still slow, but again with time they will improve. A really fun course to play."

“Good addition to the golf scene in coastal Georgia. Course feels like something that could have been built in the Golden Age. Wild greens, wide fairways for the most part. Beware of a few hazards hidden from view from the tee."
