Overview
The Patterson Club dates to 1929, when General Electric Co. employees organized a Dining and Social Club with 20 charter members. The Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed course opened nearly 20 years later in 1947 on a new site in Fairfield, Conn. Today, the course is one of the best in the area, having hosted the state’s Open and Amateur, as well as numerous Metropolitan Golf Association events. The course makes captivating use of the elevation changes, including at the up-and-over finishing hole, where a speed slot can add 40 yards to a well-placed drive.

“The Patterson Club has reopened after parts of a season in the hands of Proper Golf's Jaeger Kovich. The work done prioritized width off the tee coupled with new and expanded runoffs around greens. A standout characteristic of the early RTJ Sr. layout is the variety of green sizes around the course. The driveable 16th's green is the size of a backyard swimming pool, while the par 5 14th is some 40 paces wide."

“Jaeger Kovich's renovation transformed The Patterson Club from a very upscale Club with a decent golf course into a very upscale Club with a fun and very good golf course. While the routing is somewhat similar (besides flipping the 9s and creating a new 9th hole), the course seems to have very little RTJ left aesthetically and the new bunkering is simply gorgeous. There are some real standout holes here such as the all-or-nothing short par 3 15th and risk/reward short par 4 16th that rises out of the ground like a volcano of bunkers. The course is very playable with wide fairways, but can be stretched out to over 7000 yards with some monster uphill par fours such as 4 and 7. Overall, The Patterson Club really impressed me and I think this course definitely competes for a top 10 spot in CT now."

“What a unexpected gem! The Patterson Club (TPC) and the renovations led by Jaeger Kovich exceed expectations. For decades, the Course was shaped originally by Robert Trent Johnes, Sr. and later by others. The leadership of the Club stepped forward, hired Kovich, and now have superior layout, well-conditioned, and very enjoyable to play, Kovich focused initially on infrastructure, which is very evident in the excellent conditioning of the Course only three months after its renovation. No sod seems, very few bare spots and excellent green contours. The Course offers wide fairways for high handicappers but requires proper shot placement for the lower handicappers to score. The elevation changes add to the strategy of proper placement of shots. The Course is truly fun to play! The mix of par 3s are excellent – vary in length, shot and approach. As well, the hole routing takes advantage of changing wind conditions. Kovich re-designed the 9th hole par 3, and challenging shot for any player. Wonderful use of the sidehill terrain and supporting bunkers. The par-3 12th hole over the water is a strong risk/reward shot. The uphill 16th hole drivable par 4 offers so many options. TPC is worth a visit and more. It is a fun course to play, offers great variety, but can challenge the best from the tips. TPC will rise in the rankings – it is deserving!"

“An enjoyable round from start to finish, with interesting blind shots, great green complexes, and a great collection of par 3s. If you have the chance to play this (especially post-restoration work), take the chance. Not only is the course well maintained and designed, but the hospitality is excellent and everyone greets you with a smile. The clubhouse has a number of large rooms for dining, drinks, or generally relaxing"

“Played on a breezy summer day, ideal weather. This RTJ Sr course was recently transformed by Kovich, an understudy of Gil Hanse. Very nicely done job, with large, undulating greens, excellent bunkering and a clean overall appearance. The course scores well on Aesthetics, Layout and Conditioning, but less so on Shot Options and Challenge. Very appropriately done transformation for a solid country club course, though not quite challenging enough for the scratch player. That said, it is likely that as the greens mature and become firmer/faster, the challenge around the greens should increase measurably. Very difficult to walk, players take cart with forecaddy. Enjoyable to play, not a must-do."

“Renovation a couple of years ago really opened up the course. Patterson has lots of different looks, uphill, downhill, doglegs right and left. The par-3s stand out now. With many trees gone, the vistas are beautiful."
