Overview
Situated within a mecca of great golf courses, Tamarack Country Club stands out as one of the finest. Built by Charles Banks in 1929, the course includes many template holes that were the trademark of Banks’ mentors, Seth Raynor and C.B. Macdonald, and a few great original holes on the back nine. The course is memorable for its massive scale throughout the property, often allowing players to recover from wayward misses. Though Tamarack delivers options where you can hit it, the brawny course makes it difficult to score if you’re not in the correct spots. A historical restoration by Brian Schneider, completed in 2023, focused on continued tree removal, reestablishing old fairway parameters, tying the green entrances into the approaches and returning the bunkering shapes and schemes to what was first developed by Banks but later modified through the decades.

“The revised Tamarack has an argument to be the best course in Connecticut. It is more difficult that the normal template course, with multiple bunkers and native areas in the otherwise wide landing areas. Huge greens and very deep greenside bunkers make this a very difficult course for the average player. Very good par threes with an excellent Redan hole and very challenging Biarritz with the largest Biarritz green that I have played. Excellent conditioning in both fairways and greens. Nice complexity in the large green complexes with internal mounding. Playing here without a three putt would be a significant accomplishment. Most approach shots require an aerial approach and the course is difficult for higher handicap players."

“Brian Schneider's restoration and reimagining of Charles Banks 1929 design is a thoughful and compelling turnback of old world architecture with modern agronomy. Massive tree removal, green and bunker expansion/ reclamation and elimination of non-Banks features has created one of the most unique and difficult but fair tests of golf I've experienced. Geometric shaping around the greens looked to be a total reclamation of Steam Shovel Bank's initial forms. Truly a right out in front of you test - you know nearly immediately where you can miss and where you can't. Not knowing the previous version prior to Schneider but some very interesting internal green characteristics harkens one to think of Perry Maxwell's work. A true test of Bold, but Fair golf."

“A wonderful Banks offering. The par three templates are very good including the excellent redan 8th and Biarritz 12th. The punchbowl 11th was a very unique golf hole. I do feel as if the first is the Road hole and not the 14th though."

“Tamarack did not disappoint. The hilltop clubhouse, with the course unfolding around it, reminded me of Newport Country Club. The scale was far greater than I had imagined, from the expansive bunkers and massive fairways to the impressive green complexes. For a beginner, the bunkers may feel overwhelming, but overall, I was struck by the grandeur of the entire setting."

“The renovation work resulted in a lot of improved site lines while still maintaining the original intention of Banks. The tree removal was necessary to accomplish this, but it did not alter the intention of the original design, which is appreciated. The elevated greens with some of the deepest bunkers in the northeast creates a challenging yet fair test of golf that Banks would still be proud of."
