Overview
The Broadmoor Golf Club East is another timeless mountain course, built hard against Cheyenne Mountain with famed green contours that pose optical illusions. Many putts that look uphill are actually running downhill. Few golfers recognize that the East Course is a combination of nine Donald Ross holes (one through six and 16 through 18) and nine more added 30 years later by Robert Trent Jones (holes seven to 15), though a road crossing helps delineate these lower and upper holes. The East Course was the site of Jack Nicklaus’ first U.S. Amateur win in 1959 and Annika Sorenstam’s first U.S. Women’s Open win in 1995. It has also hosted the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open won by So Yeon Ryu and the 2018 U.S. Senior Open won by David Toms, their first major victories as well (at least the first on the senior circuit for Toms).

“Most of the shot option value is derived from how players manage approaches into the green complexes that present the biggest challenge of the overall layout. This includes setting up the appropriate tee shot, which often involves navigating a dogleg, to leave the best approach angle and approach placement on relatively large greens that leave players the best putting options. Greens are very severely sloped with the overall hillside topography significantly influencing putts and club selection. Missing to the wrong part of the green or the wrong side of the green leaves players with difficult recovery given the severity and speed of the greens. Overall, the routing utilizes the topography both uphill and downhill, but also across the hillside creating some challenging off camber shots. Conditioning is excellent with very fast, smooth putting surfaces, penal, but playable rough and consistent bunkers."

“Donald Ross original with some touch ups by RTJ Sr. Turtle back greens will gently move your misjudged shot to a collection area. Coming up short on the uphill par 4’s approach shots will require you to lean on your short game to hopefully make par. Par 5’s are reachable in 2 but require two well executed shots. When using the flat stick knowing where the valley is will make your putt break more than expected and most definitely affects the speed."
