“A classic design with subtle characteristics that provide plenty of challenge and intrigue. The routing is interesting and highly walkable, with the front nine skirting the perimeter and the back nine crisscrossing the interior around a creek that creates a distinctive valley and meaningful elevation changes. Shot placement and decision-making are critical throughout, with varied hole shapes, forced carries, layup options and subtle doglegs demanding thoughtful club selection and shot shape. The greens are well protected by bunkers and mounding, while creative surrounds make missed greens challenging. First-time players may struggle to identify the ideal lines, while repeat players can learn to navigate the course more effectively. A strong mix of hole lengths, hazards and strategic options rewards both precision and creativity."

“Lakewood Country Club is a golden age Tom Bendelow/Donald Ross design just 10 minutes west of downtown Denver. The course features small, slick greens with plenty of undulations to keep things interesting. Gil Hanse renovated/restored the course several years ago. In the process he converted a few mundane holes into stronger risk/reward holes that still fit with the course's overall character. These include the par-4 6th now crossing over a creek to the green, and the par-4 14th adding width, cross bunkers, and a green tucked closer to a pond behind it. Overall, layout variety is someone inhibited by the property's small footprint, but the architects over-achieved on routing, hole distinctiveness, and shot options given this limitation."

“GREAT BONES!! One of 3 Donald Ross designed courses in Colorado (Wellshire & the Broadmoor East being the other 2). Always in immaculate condition but had suffered in the past from some “gimmicky holes. Not anymore. Good mix of different length Par 3’s & 4’s going different directions, 3 completely new holes, great new bunkering yet the traditional Donald Ross “feel”, especially on the firm and fast greens. Right in the heart of Denver since 1926. Lakewood CC certainly is one of the best courses in Colorado."

“This is a course where the original nine holes were designed by Tom Bendelow in 1908, Donald Ross redesigned and expanded the course into an 18-hole layout with aspects of links design elements. Press Maxwell redesigned six holes in 1965 and Gil Hanse led a major restoration to restore the course to the original Donald Ross style in the 1990's. The parkland style course wind through hilly terrain with high ground on the north and south borders with the holes playing down and up from the creek that lies in the middle of the properly. The terrain allows elevated tee shots from the high ground and obscured or blind approaches as you climb back uphill. No two holes look alike or play the same as the course is artfully routed through the terrain with minimal earth moving. There are holes that have approaches that encourage approach shots played short of the green surface to access the pin while others require accurate lofted approaches to blind or obscured uphill pin locations. Course knowledge in needed to finesse the approach shots into scoring position. Many of the greens have too much slope for modern green speeds leaving few pinnable positions. The course was in excellent condition with well conditioned tee and fairways, firm and true greens although the greens were too firm and not receptive to anything but a short iron/wedge shot. This is a fine example of an older design aging well into modern times."

“Some of the best greens and green conditioning I've played in western US. Course makes you think off the tee and, perhaps aside from a small number of weaker holes (8,9 being 2) this approaches top tier status in Colorado. Very underrated and a great comp for another old school, underrated gem like Tacoma CC in Washington State."
