Overview
If Augusta National and Cypress Point are the most exclusive Alister MacKenzie designs, Northwood Golf Club, a couple hours north of San Francisco, is the most accessible. The short unassuming nine-holer has rates as low as $25, and juniors can play for under $15. The course plays among towering redwoods that closely hug the fairways, giving the track an imposing yet serene feel. For the setting alone, the course is a must-play, but small, sloped greens tucked between prominent bunkering give the design a uniquely MacKenzie feel.

“If you are in the Napa Valley area, this is worth putting on your list to play purely from a historical point of view. This is a nine hole course but you can play it twice to get your full 18 holes in. It's scruffy at best but tree lined throughout out with towering redwoods on each side. The course is a Mackenzie design nestled against the famous club, The Bohemian Grove. Much of the greens remain the original footprint of Mackenzie's, small in size with many shapes. The staff there are very friendly, very low key. It's a great walk and I strongly recommend you play it. checking off a bit of history in your golf journey."

“9 hole Mackenzie in the redwoods is rather unique and I would definitely recommend you play it if in the area. I don't know if I would make a special trip just to play it. Course has amazing drainage and you are able to play here when other courses would be closed for the day. Really neat experience."

“A must play if within 2 hours or so! Great set of greens and the routing brings you back by the bar on the 6th hole."

“This place is incredible! It's a little bit of a journey to get there from San Francisco or the Napa Valley, but that adds to the adventure. It's a sleepy little town and the course is like no other I've ever played. The hole designs, while great, hardly matter. Playing among the redwoods are amazing and ethereal. The greens and contours are incredible. You can clearly tell the MacKenzie influence."
