Mission Hills Country Club: Tournament

Overview
Former site of the ANA Inspiration, now to be a senior tour event, opened in 1972 and was designed by Desmond Muirhead. It is an old school parkland course with hazards, primarily bunkers defining the landing areas off the tee. The green complexes offer a variety of recovery shots unless you are short-sided, then they require a high pitch or flop to end up close to the pin. Bunkers are well maintained and consistent while the greens have defined and subtle slopes that make putting a challenge. Mature trees intrude into the fairway and often represent an unfair challenge where shots in the fairway are blocked or require the shot be shaped to access the pin. Some of the holes do not allow a driver as the risk is not commensurate with the reward. The finishing five holes are the standout on the property—with the well-known 18th hole and Poppie's Pond, the concrete-lined pool that is part of Champions Lake and site of the famous jump by ANA winners.

“Design Variety was very good with doglegs, up and down approach shots, challenging green complexes, water holes and varying length of par 4's created excellent variety."

“A very good to sometimes excellent course with some strong holes. What the course lacks is elevation change, like many Desert courses. It is fun to play, in good condition, but just not among the strongest courses in the Desert. This is a good, solid place to play."

“I played the Mission Hills Tournament course on Mother's Day Sunday, the course was fairly empty so it played quicker than the usual 5+ hours. Conditions were good, fairly firm fairways and receptive greens. This course gets a lot of play and it shows. The weather this week has been hot so the course has chosen to put a lot more water on it than usual. Decent shot options from the the back two sets of tees, this course plays similar to Classic Club in my opinion, good aesthetics and fun to play."

“A chance to play a course where the LPGA played and soon to be host to a Senior tour event. You too can play the holes the pros play - big chance to go for it in two on eighteen with a great drive!"

“Amazing how much dirt Muirfield must have moved to create this from flat desert. A good number of repetitive holes and and some unusual ones very strange (like #6). Most positive thing was the perfect setting...not too close or too far from mountains so they are a perfect backdrop (ie...great site selection). Most negative is overwatering to make it deep green. 18 is very good hole...green much bigger and tougher than looks on TV"

“One of my all time favorite courses. Host to the LPGA major championship. Privileged to play in the Pro Am for the LPGA event. The condition of the course was near perfect. I play it 6 or more times a year and the condition is only in really nice shape for the tournament. "

“I played two weeks prior to 2019 ANA with a member, so the rough was up 4-5" and growing, fairways 24-26yds wide and greens rolling true about 11.5. Also attended ANA every day and walked the course a lot, which provided a solid test for the LPGA's best. Lots of golf history at this venue as well as excellent practice facility. One large clubhouse serves members who also can play Pete Dye and Palmer private courses. Conditioning when I played Dinah Shore tournament course was exceptional, but also added to the difficulty, and likely not what the members experience day to day. Members favorite of the three to chose from I was advised is the Palmer course, which I also played. One reason is it is the easiest of the three, plus an easier walk or ride."
