Overview
About 30 minutes south of Scottsdale, Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass is an underrated public facility with a world-class practice facility and two very good courses. For five years, the then-Nationwide Tour hosted an event here, the Gila River Golf Classic, an ode to the heritage of the surrounding Gila River Indian Reservation. The layouts—the Cattail and the Devil's Claw—are routed over 500 acres, with half of that being native vegetation. The courses boast large greens and wide fairways for the most part, but golfers are rewarded for taking on hazards with shorter lines into the greens, which boast subtle but tumbling undulations.

“This is a quality course that, honestly, is typical of courses in the area charging similar fees. Nothing particular to recommend it at the price. Fairways are generous. Builders created holes with pleasant pitches, angles and rolls. Bunkering is minimal, yet effective and not overly penal. Every green had a bunker free approach side, encouraging run up plays. Greens the day I played ran about 9-9.5. Contours were moderate with three or four defined hole location areas separated by more severe sloping. A fun, well-conditioned, "resort" style course."

“This public facility really has everything you'd want: Two really fun layouts with interesting greens and nice facilities. Cattail and Devil's Claw each offer a balance of playability for the lesser player, but they will challenge the best players in the world—as it's done in the past, hosting Korn Ferry Tour Q-School."

“The less interesting of the two 18's. A lot of back and forth across similar terrain and in many places it is hard to discern the front nine from the back nine. Shot values are pretty limited. But, a nicely conditioned course at the right price."

“Very good resort course with two hotels on property. Usually in great condition, playable for all."
