Hot Shots: Tracking golf ball sales

The average selling price for a dozen balls was 3 percent higher than last August. Metalwoods sales were up 6 percent in units over last August, but the average selling price was 5 percent lower. It probably helps that buyers can easily understand the performance difference between pricier and cheaper balls. The most expensive are designed to optimize play from tee to green and around it, and lower-priced balls tend to offer less performance, especially around the green.
