"Charity awaits Tiger's decision," the headline in Tucson's Arizona Daily Star reads. The story is regarding how Tiger Woods' decision on whether to play the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship will have a bearing on the charitable contributions the tournament can make, many of them going to children's groups.
The story notes that the recession is taking a toll on corporate and ticket sales for the event, but that Woods, by electing to play, could help make up some of that lost revenue, a significant portion of which would go the charities the tournament supports.
This is true, of course, but it's true wherever Tiger plays, in a bad economy or a good one. It's patently unfair to financially place the onus on Woods by directly linking his decision to the fortunes of the tournament charities.
