Paige Spiranac can pose, but can she play? Laura Davies says ‘give her a chance’

Stories of interest you might have missed…

Paige Spiranac is an Instagram star who is making her professional debut via a sponsor invitation in the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters this week. A good thing? Laura Davis is reserving judgement. “I mean, good luck to her,” Davies said in this story by John McAuley in the National. “Everyone needs a chance and if she’s a good player, then it’s great she’s here. If she’s here for any other reason than she’s a great golfer, then it’s a little bit pointless. But we have to give her a chance.” Spiranac shot 77 in the first round.

The Tiger Woods news last week sounded like a post-mortem to a career. Not so fast, Bob Harig of ESPN writes. “Woods never said he was retiring, never said there would be no comeback, and as the days progressed at the Hero World Challenge…he transmitted a ‘don't count me out, yet’ vibe in various impromptu conversations and interviews.”

Zach Johnson and Patrick Rodgers are teammates in Greg Norman’s Franklin Templeton Shootout this week. “In about three weeks, not so much,” Greg Hardwig of the Naples Daily News writes. “It's not that they don't like each other. Rodgers sees Johnson as a mentor, and the two happen to have the same manager. But the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day happens to have Stanford, where Rodgers went to college, facing Iowa. Johnson went to Drake, which is in Des Moines, but is a huge Hawkeyes fan.”
