Bill Haas spoke openly during the week about how his father, former PGA Tour player and Ryder Cupper Bill Haas, helped him with his game prior to finishing second in a playoff in the Valspar Championship. What he didn’t say was that Jay was instrumental in an equipment switch as well. Bill has used both a Titleist 915D2 and 915D4 during the 2015-16 season, but after nine holes of the Wednesday Pro-Am Jay went to the Titleist tour trailer and had a new 915D2 built for his son. The new driver was a different loft (9.5 instead of the 10.5 he had in his 915D4), had a new shaft (Mitsubishi Tensei 60x as opposed to Aldila Rogue) that was ¼-inch shorter than the 45-inch shaft Haas had been using. The adjustable hosel was set in the B-2 position (slightly upright).
Haas’ putter also well at Innisbrook’s Copperhead course (1.501 strokes gained/putting, including a clutch six-footer at the 15th to save par and maintain the lead). The club is a Scotty Cameron by Titleist Futura X mallet putter. The club was built for him at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am by Cameron tour rep Kelly Moser and is 35 inches in length with 3.5 degrees loft. The putter is a little different visually as it boasts a black shaft and what the company refers to as a “honey-dipped” finish.
