Jon Rahm almost has too many titles to his name right now. The World No. 1, FedEx Cup leader and reigning Masters champ will headline the Mexico Open at Vidanta field looking to keep the good times going and defend his 2022 title at this event.
“I've spoken at length about the importance of Seve [Ballesteros] and his impact on the game of golf and how I play because of him … I feel like I can make some impact in Mexico as well, and Mexico deserves a good event,” Rahm said last year. “You can even see golf growing in Mexico as well. So, it's a true honor to be able to come here in this first edition of the event to be the champion. It was a wonderful week.”
The Spaniard won last year at Vidanta Vallarta behind a 12-foot birdie on the 14th hole that jumped him out of a four-way tie for first during the final round. He eventually closed things out with back-to-back pars to best Tony Finau, Kurt Kitayama and Brandon Wu. Finau returns, too, to try to see if he can improve on his performance from a year ago.
The tournament also will have 17 Latin American players in the field, led by Nico Echavarria who sits 67th on the FedExCup standings. Echavarria, from Colombia, won the Puerto Rico Open earlier this year
The winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.386 million share of the $7.7 million purse.
Golf Channel will carry live coverage on Thursday and Friday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. EDT. On Saturday and Sunday, Golf Channel will start the coverage from 1-3 p.m. with CBS taking over with afternoon coverage from 3-6 p.m.
