Putt With More Control

Counterbalanced putters will be a prominent item in golf shops this year. These are the ones with long grips that don't quite touch your belly but allow you to place your hands or forearms in a variety of positions. The extra weight in the grip makes it harder for the hands to get overly active during the stroke. These long grips also enable a useful drill. Place a tee in the end of the grip and make practice strokes, making sure the tee always points at your navel—at address, at the end of the backstroke and at the finish (above). If the tee points backward at the finish, you're probably getting handsy. If the tee points forward, you're likely blocking your putts.
